After School

A Biennial Focusing on Young Contemporary Creation

After School is the fruit of the association between artpress, a contemporary art magazine interested in young creation, the École supérieure d’art et design de Saint-Étienne (ESADSE), and the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain. The first edition of this biennial brings together thirty-six recent art graduates from French tertiary institutions, who are already engaged in an art career. A selection committee chose them from among 150 portfolios deriving from thirty-nine public art schools.

The exhibition extends over more than 2 000 m², divided between the rooms of the MAMC+ and an industrial building of the Cité du Design. It thus allows each artist to be represented in the best possible conditions.

This biennial is not intended as a representative sampling of current creation nor does it provide an overview. The selection committee and the two curators strived to look beyond the most frequently presented practices and identify unique propositions that open up new perspectives. After School is therefore supported by the honed eye of art critics. 

The biennial aligns practices or, on the contrary, brings them into tension. It accords as much importance to the materiality of forms and media as to auditive, performative, or… furtive approaches!
